What we did in Rome – Day 1 and 2

Wednesday (Day 1)

Taxi to hotel, check in.

Out to dinner at al Vero Girarrosto Toscano (same place I went with Dad on last visit).

Thursday (Day 2)

Relaxing breakfast in hotel.  Rachel couldn’t believe how relaxed I was – I didn’t rush her out after 20 minutes!  We probably sat for an hour… drank coffee, talked, planned our day, people watched (lots of interesting people, including one middle eastern family having lavash with breakfast).  I just wanted to have a relaxing morning to help recover a bit from the tiring 24 hours of travel yesterday!

Walked to Metro, tried to buy tickets at machine but it only took small bills and we had only 20’s.  Oh well.  We took a taxi to colosseum and bought Roma Pass (which allowed us to avoid an hour-long line at the Colosseum).

Explored Colosseum.

Short visit to Palatine Hill  (skipped the Roman Forum – tired of ruins already and I’ve been there before).

Taxi to Via del Corso, sat at a cafe for about half an hour for coffee, iced tea, a couple jam cookies and people watching.  So many interesting outfits.  Rachel has become an expert at figuring out who the locals are.

Window shopping, then shopping on Via Condotti (Prada, Burberry, Gucci, etc.).  Rachel didn’t buy the $1500 purse she liked.

Quick coffee at famous Caffe Greco.

Sat on Spanish steps.

Walked to Rick Steves recc pizza place but it was closed, ended up at a nearby pizzeria called Pizza Roma.  Sat in back.. and had three types of pizza and roasted peppers.

Ended up at Trevi Fountain (by accident), picked up gelato and took taxi back to hotel to relax and review the photos I took today (and write this blog post).

I went down to the bar for a coffee and time on the computer while Rachel took a nap.

Today was a great first day… we had such a great time together!  Looking forward to tomorrow… 2 PM entry ticket to the Vatican museums.

Argued with the bartender about charging me for my coffee refill… I would have left it alone if the coffees weren’t $9 each!

(Tonight’s dinner details will be in tomorrow’s update.)
