ichat video tips

With Tiger, I could rarely get the video to work in ichat. It would say the other user had “declined the invitation” or “failed to respond”, and usually I’d give up and use Skype.

Under Leopard, I’ve been having much better luck with ichat video, but it still doesn’t work all the time. Here’s one tip to try to improve your chances.

ichat video takes up a LOT of bandwidth, and if you or the person on the other end of the chat doesn’t have enough bandwidth, the software will give you one of the two errors above. But you can limit the amount of bandwidth that you allow ichat to use for your outgoing video.

To access the settings, go to ICHAT on the menu bar and select PREFERENCES (or type APPLE-comma) and click on audio/video at the top. At the bottom of the window you’ll see Bandwidth Limit. If you leave it on NONE (default), it will use as much bandwidth as it wants. Try limiting it to 1 or 2 Mbps, or even lower. Your outgoing video quality will be much worse, but it might work.
